National Aboriginal Fisheries Forum II - Seize the Economic Opportunities

Nanaimo, BC: October 2nd - 4th, 2014

The Aboriginal Aquaculture Association along with other co-hosts hosted the 2nd National Aboriginal Fisheries Forum.

The forum's focus was on economic development opportunities related to the fisheries and Aquaculture sectors in Aboriginal communities. Some 300 delegates attended.

Participants from First Nation communities from across Canada, federal and provincial governments and the aquaculture industry came together to share information, knowledge and case studies.

More than a dozen presentations were provided to inform the delegates about what other First Nations and non-aboriginal organizations are doing to stimulate economic development through aquaculture.  They spoke of their experiences with regard to capacity building, training, youth engagement and the creation of partnerships.   Delegates heard of the diversity of species that are being cultured in aboriginal ventures, including salmon, trout, oysters and mussels, as well as emerging species such as geoduck, sablefish and sea cucumbers.

The presentations from Day 2 Aquaculture session are available here for your review.
